Year 6

In Year 6, we begin the year by getting to know each other better, developing our teamwork skills and independence when we go on our residential trip. During this week we try new activities and foods, challenging ourselves whilst gaining confidence in our own ability. We think about how we can link these experiences to those of St Aidan, who had to have confidence in his ability when establishing the early church in the Northern reaches of our country.

We learn about British history which is relevant to our local area, including the Victorians, the Second World War and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. We look at topics such as the rainforest in Brazil in geography, linking this to our science work on living things and their habitats. In maths and English we focus on developing the skills we have learnt through our time at St Joesph’s; we link our maths to real-world scenarios and our English writing to texts or short films that we are enjoying in class. Towards the end of the year we think about our transition to Year 7. We do this through working with the local secondary schools and through our very comprehensive PSHE curriculum, which thoroughly prepares us for any changes that we might face in the years ahead.

During Year 6 there are opportunities for lots of trips, visits and responsibilities. Not only do we go on our residential trip, but we also visit the Create Centre to attend a Life Skills workshop, perform a carol concert at St Joseph’s church and bring our history topic to life at the MShed, as well as attending a Year 6 Celebration Mass at Clifton Cathedral. We lead the school in its prayer life as the Chaplaincy team, help the younger children as Reception Buddies and KS1 Play Leaders. We are house captains and members of the school council, who help to give the voice of the children to the Senior Leadership Team and the Governors.

Year 6 is an incredibly exciting year with lots going on. We work hard in our lessons and enjoy the extra responsibilities that come with being in Year 6. One of the many highlights of the year is always the end of year production, where singing, dancing, scenery and costumes come together in an explosion of creativity!

Please have a look at our timetable and yearly overview to find out a bit more about what we get up to through the year. Mr Broyd (Class Teacher) and Mrs Geary (Learning Support Assistant) will always be on hand to help you if you are finding something challenging, or push you if you are in need of a challenge!
