Welcome

Dear Parents and Carers,

On behalf of the children, staff and governors of St Joseph’s Primary School, we would like to extend a warm welcome to all visitors to our website, whether you are an existing parent seeking the latest information or a prospective parent choosing a school for your child. It is updated regularly with the latest school news, calendar dates, newsletters and curriculum matters and we hope that it provides an insight into our busy but very friendly school.

Pupils enjoy coming to this school, which is described as a ‘happy family’. Pupils get along well. Older pupils like having jobs to care for the youngest children. The gospel values underpin the caring ethos that permeates the school. (Ofsted Dec 2021)
Pupils are keen to learn because teachers have high expectations. There is a strong curriculum in place, which supports pupils to achieve well. As a result, pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their education, including the children in the early years foundation stage (EYFS) (Ofsted Dec 2021).

St Joseph’s is a one form entry Catholic School in Portishead. St Joseph’s has been serving the community of Portishead for over 100 years from the convent of St Joseph’s which was situated on West Hill, before moving to it's current site on Bristol Road. It has around 200 pupils arranged in seven classes who are supported by a dedicated, experienced, highly skilled team of teachers and enthusiastic support staff. They strive to raise standards and promote a calm, purposeful but stimulating environment which makes learning exciting and enjoyable through a creative, innovative curriculum.

St Joseph’s offers plenty of space outdoors to learn and play, with a large playground, extensive playing fields and several conservation and wildlife areas. Indoors there are spacious, airy classrooms, a fully stocked library, a specialist music room and an ICT suite.

St Joseph’s has an excellent academic reputation, as highlighted in the latest OFSTED Inspection report and staff have high expectations and high aspirations for all our children.
